How to Land a Fish: Learning how to land a fish is simple, but keep safety in mind for both you and the fish. These simple beginner fishing tips will teach you how to land a fish.
HOW TO LAND A FISH: STEPS
Now that you've mastered the fundamentals of fishing (casting, reeling in a fishing line, hooking a fish when it bites, and so on), it's time to move on to the next step in learning how to catch fish. After all, what good are all the preceding steps if you can't land the fish you've hooked? Follow the steps below to increase your chances of landing successfully.
1. Drop your entire rod and reel to your waist as your fish gets closer to the boat.
2. Get your rod tip in the water and follow the fish if it goes under the boat.
3. If you can see the fish, you'll be able to tell when it's tired. It will roll over on its side to indicate that it is ready to land. You'll be able to feel the fish even if you can't see it.
4. For smaller fish, such as crappie, quickly lift them from the water with your hand or a fishing net, then cradle the fish around the belly to remove the hook.
HOW TO NET A FISH: STEPS
A fishing net is usually the best way to land a larger fish or one with sharp teeth.
1. Place the fishing net in the water and guide the fish head first into the net.
2. Don't stab the fish with the net. If you miss the first time, re-aim and try again.
3. Get it out of the water and remove the hook as soon as possible so you can either release it or store it in a Livewell or fish box to eat later.
Using a fishing net is also beneficial when learning how to catch fish, particularly when practicing catch and release. Because they are safer for the fish, rubber nets are preferred for catch-and-release fishing. Nets reduce the amount of time you are in contact with a fish. In the catch-and-release section, you can learn more about these techniques.
